OOC: About Costte
•CHARACTER NAME: Cosette Bridget Halloran
•CHARACTER AGE: 19
•BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Cosette Halloran was born off the coast of Wicklow, Ireland in the Irish Sea, to parents considered of significance within the Siren nobility of that area. As the youngest daughter of five sons, her parents felt no need to care for her and thus, shoved her off on the first siren who would take her, her cousin Jasmine Halloran from the Mediterranean Sea. With tensions rising between Sirens in that part of the world, Aunt Jasmine quickly took Cosette when she was barely two years old and settled with her in Siren Cove, Maine because of the safe haven it presented for sirens.
Cosette grew up in Siren Cove on land with her Aunt, blending in with the outside world for safety purposes. However, she was always aware of her heritage, both as a siren and as an exiled member of noble siren society. Jasmine never wanted to hide anything from her, devoted as she was to Cosette. She taught Cosette how to wield and control her powers even as Cosette attended public school and appeared to the world a normal child, participating in various sports and choirs over the years.
Jasmine never had much money to begin with, so when she made the move to Siren Cove, she moved into a small, one bedroom apartment with Cosette. She occasionally had to work two jobs to make ends meet, but once Cosette grew old enough, she put in her share through various babysitting jobs and, currently, her part-time job at the public library.
Cosette currently attends Saint Bernadette's University, living at home while pursuing a dual major in vocal performance and music education, aspiring to become a teacher, secretly hoping to become a singing sensation just to prove to her birth parents how wrong they were about her.
•PERSONALITY: Cosette doesn’t remember the family that abandoned her. She knows she has parents and five older brothers somewhere out in the world, but she doesn’t think of them often, if at all. Aunt Jasmine has always been Cosette’s true mother, and nothing will convince Cosette otherwise. She is extremely protective of her aunt, and will not hesitate to protect her at all costs. Jasmine means the world to her, having raised her with love on her own, even when it seemed impossible to carry on in the world.
Cosette knows she hails from nobility, but the fact means nothing to her. Growing up relatively poor, she’s learned to appreciate the good in life and to not think of herself as better than anyone. She’s used to lending a hand to help out in times of trouble, and tries to volunteer when she gets the opportunity to do so.
That said, Cosette is prone to moments of despair, of wondering what her life might have been if her parents hadn’t abandoned her. She sometimes becomes overwhelmed with the idea of needing to prove herself to them. She daydreams often, and most people upon first meeting her assume her to be a very serious person. She can be harsh when she feels she has been wronged, and though she tries to adhere to the lessons of her aunt in terms of using her powers only for good, when pushed far enough, Cosette will use her siren powers as a means of revenge.
Music means the world to her, and though she is not religious herself, Cosette finds she really loves singing Christian hymns. She listens to just about everything, however, though she doesn’t care for country music, one of the few disagreements she ever has with her Aunt, who is convinced she is going to marry Kenny Chesney one day.
She is a creative person in general, Cosette, and will often indulge in activities such as sketching and knitting when trying to distract herself. She can’t cook for beans, though, something Aunt Jasmine always points out over their third take out meal in the week.
Ultimately, Cosette is a determined young woman torn between wanting to make a difference in students’ lives through music and pursuing a music career of her own. She is proud of her lovely singing voice and practices as often as she can, much to the testament of Aunt Jasmine’s patience.
•OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Cosette thinks the rivalry is dumb and harmful to others; she cares little for either family, though she especially dislikes the Thorntons for their proud ways and disdain for the supernatural element.
•LIFESTYLE: Cosette attends community college while living at home in her one bedroom apartment with her Aunt Jasmine. They’ve never minded sharing a room, often staying up into the wee hours of the morning gossiping like high school students. In spite of the small space, Cosette cannot imagine anywhere else as home; her knack for arts and crafts as helped to decorate the space beautifully, in such a way that one would not suspect their lack of fortune from anything but the lack of space.
Cosette currently also works part-time at the library to help out Aunt Jasmine, who has worked as a manager at one of the chain food supermarkets in town since moving to Siren Cove. Cosette knows the importance of saving money, but occasionally is prone to indulging a bit by buying a book new. Most things, such as clothes, shoes, home products, etc. she buys used.
Cosette has a massive sweet tooth and very much enjoys indulging in an ice cream cone or two when the mood strikes, a trait she suspects she inherits from Jasmine, who always brings home goodies from work and is a decent pastry cook herself.
Cosette is also openly gay, first realizing her attraction to girls when she entered middle school. Her Aunt has always been supportive of her and constantly teases her about bringing home a girlfriend, which is a fairly rare occurrence in their apartment.
•HUMAN, WITCH, OR SIREN: Siren. Cosette has a beautiful singing voice and loves to perform as a member of the town choir. She is able to control the powers of her voice so that it does not affect those around her. She also has the ability to bestow good fortune upon others, if she so chooses, though this power is limited in that it only seems to work during the full moon. In her sea form, instead of appearing half human, half fish, she maintains the upper body of a human and the lower half of a seal, which only further supports the rumor that her ancestors were selkies rather than sirens.
